Tom James who before his own rare disease changed his career course was a medical provider. Because of physical limitations from his disease, moved into direct research and later university teaching. He was active in developing the rural medicine/residency program in his home state as well as active in foster care advocacy. He also operated a small business with his wife. Now fully retired from the medical and business world, TJ is living in Texas, and with his wife is raising the last 2 of 14 adopted medical special needs children. He continues to be devoted to patient advocacy and peer-to-peer patient support. His most recent project beyond being Co-executive Director of Ben’s Friends is
a return to internship, this time as a Hospice Chaplain.
